Talk to your clients. Year after year, the failure to communicate is the number one complaint filed against lawyers with the State Bar of Texas. It is also the easiest to avoid. Texas Disciplinary Rule of Professional Conduct 1.03 requires that lawyers keep their clients reasonably informed about the status of their matter and promptly comply with reasonable requests for information. Accordingly, lawyers should strive to keep clients informed by sending regular updates of material events at least every 30 days. In addition to the regularly scheduled updates, send communications to the client of significant developments in the case and forward material filings with an explanation of what it means to their legal matter.
