TLI Top Tip: Help! My client refuses to communicate with me

Even when a client has sought out an attorney for legal representation, the client may, during the representation, stop responding to the lawyer’s inquiries, go missing, or refuse to participate in the legal proceedings. As confounding as this may seem, it is often because legal matters, especially litigation, can be overwhelming, unfamiliar, expensive and scary. A client may be disinclined to deal with the stressful situation and instead stick their head in the sand, hoping the matter goes away. Or the client may not understand the importance of their participation in the case, thinking the lawyer can just handle it. 

This situation can put the lawyer in a tricky situation, especially if there are matters which require input or decisions by the client, such as filing deadlines, or things like discovery responses which require the client’s involvement. So, what is a lawyer to do?
