About TLIE

Texas Lawyers' Insurance Exchange was organized in 1978 as a Texas reciprocal insurance exchange and began operations in 1979 under the sponsorship of the State Bar of Texas Insurance Trust. Prior to 1978, Texas lawyers were experiencing significant difficulty obtaining legal malpractice coverage at reasonable rates. Consequently, the Board of Directors of the State Bar of Texas and the Insurance Trust approved a plan for the organization of an insurance carrier devoted to writing professional liability insurance for Texas lawyers.

Since that time, commercial insurance carriers have come and gone from Texas, but TLIE has been a consistent and stable source of high-quality professional legal malpractice insurance at financially responsible rates for Texas lawyers and judges. TLIE is owned by its member insureds and is operated by a member-elected board of directors. TLIE currently insures over 5,000 Texas lawyers and judges. Through superior underwriting and claims practices, TLIE has returned over $24 million in profits to its member insureds over the past 13 years.

TLIE's core business is providing professional liability insurance to Texas lawyers and judges, but TLIE has relationships with several organizations which can provide excess and other types of insurance. In November 1998, through its wholly owned subsidiary, Texas Lawyers' Professional Insurance Agency, TLIE contracted with Texas Associates Insurors to offer a variety of insurance products that Texas lawyers might need in addition to professional liability insurance.

TLIE is a member of the National Association of Bar Related Insurance Companies (NABRICO). Like TLIE, each of the NABRICO companies have the same mission of providing a stable source of attorneys' professional liability insurance at a financially responsible price. The list of NABRICO companies can be found at www.nabrico.org.
